Every dog owner already owns a solution to this problem, and every one of them has a flaw. Plastic bags work, but they put your hand two microns from the thing you're picking up, and they force you to bend down twice a day, every day, in the rain, in the dark, on a knee that doesn't love it.

The six claws grip the bag open and close it around the waste, so your hand stays clean and dry. 1. Load the bag. Pull the bag tail out from the bottom of the barrel.

2. Fold it over the claws. Turn the open end of the bag outward and stretch it back over the six claws, so the bag lines the inside of the grip.

3. Position and press. Stand over the waste, lower the claws around it and press the top handle, the claws close and the bag closes with them.

4. Lift and seal. Lift the tool, slide the loaded bag off the claws, tie it, and bin it.

5. Refill when the roll runs out. Open the two top lids, drop in a fresh roll, pull the tail through the base, close the lids. Roughly fifteen seconds.

6. Clip it back on the leash and forget about it until tomorrow.

- Rinse the claw assembly under running water after use; a drop of mild dish soap for anything stubborn.

- Let the claws air dry fully open before closing the tool, trapped moisture is what makes any scooper smell.

- Keep the bag chamber dry; wet bags stick together on the roll.

- Do not put it in a dishwasher, pour boiling water into it, or leave it on a hot dashboard in summer.

- Check the claw spring occasionally. If the claws stop returning cleanly, rinse out grit around the hinge points.

- Store clipped to the leash or in the walking bag so it's never the reason you left without it.
